Tradesmen have just three weeks left to pay HMRC any unpaid tax owed

Published 10th Aug 2011

Plumbers, gas fitters and heating engineers have just three weeks left to pay HM Revenue & Customs any unpaid tax owed.

All workers in these trades were offered a tax ‘amnesty’ until the end of May to confess to any income they may have made but not paid the due tax on.

Since then, HMRC has been clamping down on those who have chosen not to take advantage of its Plumbers Tax Safe Plan.

Under this plan, every plumber, gas fitter, heating engineer and member of associated trades who owed tax they had not declared would only face a penalty of 10 per cent of what they owed.

The maximum penalty is usually up to 100 per cent, with defaulters also facing criminal prosecution. They have until August 31 to arrange for payment.
