Government new build home targets unlikely to be met in East of England

Published 16th Oct 2008

The Government's national housing target of building two million new homes by 2016 is looking further out of reach with the downturn in the construction industry sending growth in private housing workloads to a record low, according to the latest RICS UK Construction Market Survey.

In the East of England, following significant declines over the past two quarters, private housing sector workloads plummeted yet again. 61% more surveyors reporting a fall than a rise, compared to 27% last quarter. Consequently the Government's target of building 25,400 new homes in the region, every year up to 2021, is unlikely to be achieved.
